As the world economy goes increasingly digital, more online communities are emerging, becoming powerful social structures, bringing together individuals who coordinate, communicate, and collaborate for both enjoyment and economic gain. They represent a microcosm of human organization, driven by shared goals and incentives that span communities of all sizes and specializations.
We are seeing a similar movement in Web3 in the form of guilds. Guilds gained popularity in web2 gaming, through games like WoW and Runescape, however, the concept dates back to medieval times, when guilds with specialised skills banded together for economic benefit. YGG is bringing this activity onchain, offering a new model for the gig economy that encompasses work, play, and learning in decentralized environments.
Bringing this foundation to the future is the YGG Guild Protocol. YGG has evolved to a comprehensive Guild Protocol, bringing communities onchain by providing infrastructure and tooling to scale economic opportunities across the entire Web3 ecosystem. As a guild of guilds, YGG has extended even beyond gaming by bringing opportunities to earn through AI data labelling and DePIN tasks to its community of guilds as well.
At its core, YGG is a comprehensive infrastructure that hosts a myriad of decentralized applications (dApps), empowering people worldwide to organize, scale, and monetize their skills and efforts. The Guild Protocol's innovative approach allows users to earn credentials through real effort, building an onchain reputation that opens doors to new opportunities.
New features of the Guild Protocol include:
Onchain Infrastructure: Leveraging blockchain technology to ensure transparent, secure, and decentralized guild operations.
Reputation System: Implementing soulbound tokens (SBTs) to create verifiable, onchain reputations for guild members.
Asset Management: Providing tools for guilds to manage shared resources and distribute rewards efficiently.
Activity Coordination: Offering mechanisms for organizing quests, tasks, and collaborative projects within guilds.
Interoperability: Enabling guilds to operate across multiple blockchain ecosystems and Web3 applications.
Importantly, this system enables guild members to earn and distribute rewards among themselves in a permissionless and trustless manner, leveraging the power of blockchain technology. This is one of YGG’s key goals where it aims to create an inclusive space where anyone can join a guild, discover economic opportunities, and continuously improve their skills within a community of like-minded individuals. This approach reimagines the gig economy for the Web3 era, providing a platform where people can play, work, and learn together in a decentralized and empowering environment.
Thus far, this evolution led to remarkable growth:
A global network of 11 regional guild partners
A network reach of 7 million
Partnerships with over 100 Web3 gaming-related projects
YGG is poised to transform digital economies, digital identity and digital credentialing, positioning the Guild Protocol as a potential coordination layer for a wide array of human activities in the digital realm, from simple one-off tasks to large-scale projects.

Overview of YGG
Leader in Gaming
YGG has established itself as a dominant force in Web3 by evolving into a Guild Protocol. This protocol provides the infrastructure and tools necessary for creating and managing guilds across various Web3 applications, extending far beyond gaming.
Over the years, YGG has bootstrapped a robust ecosystem consisting of 11 regional guild partners, including W3GG, YGG Pilipinas, OLA GG, and KGeN, more than 100 partnerships, and a global community of over 7 million gamers.
Regional guild partners play a key role in expanding YGG’s ecosystem by supporting localized player communities. This is achieved through creation of language-specific support services and tailored education content. With these efforts in place to ensure that players from various countries are able to have the best gaming experience, YGG further solidifies its position as a leading hub and onboarding platform for Web3 gaming communities.
This is evidenced by their Guild Advancement Program (GAP). GAP is a questing program implemented by YGG, with an onchain reputation system where rewards are distributed to guild members based on their in-game achievements as well as their community contributions, which could include creating tutorials to onboard new players, posting of content for community management, and others. These contributions are met with rewards in the form of points that can be exchanged for YGG tokens, as well as non-transferable achievement badges in the form of soulbound tokens (SBTs).
The most recent iteration, Season 6, saw unprecedented participation with 83,405 total enrollments - nearly matching the combined enrollments of the previous five seasons. This growth demonstrates YGG's success in creating a platform that engages and rewards community members for their demonstrable achievements and contributions across various Web3 activities. With the recent launch of GAP Season 7, YGG is poised to build on this success even further.
YGG also features Superquests, which are quests that are deeply integrated into games to encourage long-term engagement. Superquests are unique as they are accompanied by ‘tutorials’ crafted by game experts, aimed at helping members complete the necessary tasks to receive rewards. There are deeply integrated, multi-step challenges woven into the fabric of partner games. What sets Superquests apart is their sophisticated design and implementation:
In-Game Integration: Superquests are seamlessly integrated into the game's core mechanics, providing a native feel that enhances the overall gaming experience.
Expert-Crafted Tutorials: Each Superquest is accompanied by comprehensive tutorials created by game experts. These guides go beyond basic instructions, offering strategic insights and tips to help players master game mechanics.
Real-Time Analytics: Superquests leverage advanced analytics to track player progress in real-time. This allows for dynamic quest adjustments and personalized player experiences.
Tiered Reward Structure: Players earn rewards at multiple stages of a Superquest, incentivizing continued engagement and progression.
Community Challenges: Some Superquests incorporate collaborative elements, encouraging players to work together to achieve common goals.
Skill Development Focus: Rather than simple grinding, Superquests are designed to help players develop and showcase specific in-game skills.
By combining these elements, Superquests create a more immersive, rewarding, and educational experience that drives long-term player engagement and retention. They serve as a powerful tool for both game developers and players, fostering a deeper connection to the game world and the broader YGG community.
Ultimately while some guilds have chosen to explore the launch of Layer 2 solutions, YGG remains steadfast in its commitment to becoming the preferred protocol for all Web3 applications and participants.
Rather than focusing on a specific blockchain or platform, YGG's strategy is to provide an overarching infrastructure that can seamlessly integrate with various Web3 ecosystems, enabling guilds and participants to thrive across multiple platforms and sectors.
Expanding beyond gaming
YGG has also expanded its focus from gaming related tasks such as community moderators, esports players, and game testers to newer roles in the rapidly growing Web3 industry such as AI bounties for data labelling tasks.
In line with YGG's expanding vision, GAP Season 6 introduced innovative AI-focused bounties. These new quests attracted 3,095 participants, who engaged with AI data labeling platforms like Sapien and Navigate, as well as FrodoBots, a gamified application for AI data training and robotics.
This initiative demonstrates YGG's commitment to exploring cutting-edge technologies and providing diverse opportunities for its community beyond traditional gaming activities. We will explore more into this under the Web3 case studies section.
In many ways, YGG's approach is similar to a combination of Uber and LinkedIn for the Web3 era. Just as Uber revolutionized the way people organize and access transportation services, YGG is enabling individuals to self-organize into guilds and access a multitude of opportunities. YGG also allows gaming professionals to prove their skills through badges and SBTs, building up their reputation. This creates an immutable and trustless reputation system, offering a more robust and reliable method of credential verification in the Web3 era.
Let’s explore the new features that YGG has developed in order to achieve their vision.
YGG Guild Protocol Features
Onchain Reputation
Yield Guild Games (YGG) has introduced the concept of "Reputation Cookies," which are soulbound tokens (SBTs) or non-transferable NFTs representing a player's achievements and reputation within the gaming ecosystem.
These blockchain-based assets, known as Soulbound Tokens (SBTs), are not only immutable and verifiable but crucially, they are non-transferable. Unlike traditional NFTs, which can be traded or moved between wallets, SBTs are permanently bound to a specific wallet address, effectively tying them to an individual's digital identity.
Currently it is hard to distinguish whether a user’s onchain achievements are legit or if it is a bot, and SBTs will help make the user’s reputation more trustable. SBT’s non-transferability is a game-changer for reputation systems. The immutability of blockchain ensures that once an SBT is issued, its record cannot be altered or erased while allowing anyone to confirm the validity of these achievements without relying on a centralized authority.
This ensures that achievements, credentials, and experiences represented by these tokens cannot be bought, sold, or transferred to another entity. As a result, SBTs provide a powerful and tamper-proof method to prove a person's authentic reputation and accomplishments, creating cheat-proof identity and reputation systems.
This approach creates a standardized and trustworthy method to confirm achievements, skills, and contributions within the Web3 ecosystem. It effectively eliminates the possibility of identity replication or the transfer of earned reputation, ensuring that an individual's digital identity and accomplishments remain uniquely theirs. As a result, SBTs enable a more authentic, merit-based system of recognition and reward in decentralized communities and beyond.
Players can build their reputation through SBTs by participating in various activities within the YGG ecosystem. These include Superquests, the Guild Advancement Program (GAP), Bounties, AI Labeling (case study example below), and Community Moderation. As members complete these activities, they earn SBTs that serve as proof of their accomplishments, creating an immutable record of their Web3 achievements.
The implications of "Reputation Cookies" extend beyond gaming. They enable the creation of open identity networks where expertise is accessible across products. This system opens up opportunities for guilds by providing a standard method to confirm reputation, addressing the challenge of verifying genuine user engagement. For example, games can now curate users who have verifiably spent time on their product, while YGG builds a network of players with established reputations.
As YGG transitions into a protocol that enables Web3 guilds worldwide to scale, it becomes an enabler of decentralized communities. The platform supports multiple independent guilds that aggregate skilled users for mutual gain. Anyone looking for experienced guilds and guild members can now examine their onchain reputation and choose those best suited for specific tasks or opportunities.
Looking ahead, YGG is able to expand to other niche tasks, such as data labeling for AI and LLMs, copywriting, executive assistance, or accounting thanks to SBTs. This future illustrates its potential to become a LinkedIn-like platform for the future, using onchain queries for wallets with SBTs to provide verifiable credentials to individuals and open access to better opportunities for users who have historically relied on traditional job markets.
Guild Management
YGG's guild management functionality will enable groups of people to record and verify accomplishments onchain through a simple user interface, making it easy to manage gaming guilds, and in the future, groups more generally.
It is designed for anyone to start an Onchain Guild — that is, a blockchain-based guild or group — and attract members who share common interests and goals. These guilds have access to tools and an immutable account to present their portfolio of achievements in the form of NFTs. As they build their reputation onchain, they can pursue social and economic interests together.
YGG will also offer a treasury wallet feature, allowing guilds to purchase assets that guild members can use and benefit from collectively. When guild members complete quests or bounties, the rewards accrue to the shared treasury. The guild then decides how to utilize these rewards, whether by distributing them directly to members or reinvesting in additional assets to generate further rewards. This model empowers communities to collaboratively play, earn, and grow within the Web3 gaming ecosystem.
While gaming guilds have been the logical starting point for YGG, the Onchain Guild primitive has the potential to evolve far beyond this initial use case.
YGG's Guild Protocol can host guilds of any kind, not just those focused on gaming. This expansion leads to a world of diverse onchain groups, categorized into three main community types:
Social Community: This includes friend groups, competitive players, content creators/KOLs, educators, and investors. These guilds focus on building social connections and shared interests within the Web3 space.
Career Community: Aimed at professionals and specialists, this category encompasses AI labelers, designers/artists, game testers, asset creators, and bug bounty hunters. These guilds provide a platform for career development and professional networking in emerging Web3 fields.
Geographical Community: This type of guild brings together people based on physical location or institutional affiliations. It includes IRL events, companies, schools, universities, and regional guilds, fostering local connections and collaborations within the broader Web3 ecosystem.
By facilitating the creation and management of these diverse guild types, YGG is positioning itself at the forefront of decentralized community building. This approach allows for deeper engagement and greater rewards across various sectors, extending the benefits of onchain coordination far beyond the realm of gaming.
Modular Dapp System
YGG is developing a modular decentralized application (dapp) system as a core component of its Guild Protocol. This system provides a flexible and customizable set of tools for creating and managing guilds within the Web3 ecosystem.
The product team at YGG designed this modular dapp system with libraries and tools that allow people to self-organize as guilds onchain. For example, it makes it easy to set up accounts, search for and participate in activities, and trade or distribute assets. Anyone can easily combine these modules to build feature sets and become builders and traders of their own craft, turning activities on the protocol into social and economic opportunities for others.
Key features of this modular infrastructure include:
Wallet Management: Multi-signature wallets serve as secure "bank accounts" for guilds. These ERC-20 smart contract wallets have a user-friendly interface and can be created with YGG tokens on the YGG website. Onchain assets are hosted inside the wallet, and owners, signatories, and administrators can be assigned upon creation.
Guild and Membership Badges: Non-transferable NFTs represent guild creation and individual membership, establishing verifiable on-chain identities. A unique, non-transferable NFT is issued upon the creation of a guild, and each member receives a non-transferable NFT Membership Badge. YGG tokens are required to issue these badges.
NFT Issuance: Achievement badges can be minted as certificates of completion, enabling reputation building and access control for activities. These badges can also be used to set up gated quests.
Management Dashboard: Governance-related voting can be set up to approve decision-making. Administrators can remove or add members, require payment to the guild, and set up chat or collaboration tools.
Work Management: Guilds can launch tasks in the form of quests. These can be targeted for game testing, user acquisition, educational quizzes, or bottom-of-funnel transactions such as acquiring merchandise or task-specific data labeling.
This modular approach allows guilds to mix and match features, creating customized setups tailored to their specific needs. By providing these building blocks, YGG enables a wide range of communities to self-organize and operate efficiently on the blockchain, fostering innovation and growth across the Web3 space.
Web3 Case Studies
While YGG's initial focus was on gaming, these case studies demonstrate how YGG's Guild Protocol can be applied across various Web3 applications. The principles and tools developed for gaming guilds are now being adapted to support a wide range of decentralized activities.
Sapien: Gamified AI Data Labelling
YGG has recently unveiled its Future of Work initiative. Future of Work offers members of the YGG community new opportunities to earn rewards onchain through leveraging their skills to complete tasks. Among YGG’s partners for Future of Work is Sapien, which showcases how the Guild Protocol can extend beyond traditional gaming into other Web3 applications.
Established in 2023, Sapien has gained attention in the Web3 community for its innovative, gamified approach to AI data labeling. Sapien specializes in organizing and labeling data for large language models (LLMs) and other AI models, a crucial step in improving AI capabilities such as sentiment analysis, image classification, and semantic segmentation. What sets Sapien apart is its reliance on a diverse, decentralized pool of contributors rather than a fixed set of employees. This approach ensures access to native-level speakers of over 200 languages and a wide range of subject matter experts, democratizing the benefits of AI beyond the English-speaking world.
The partnership with YGG allows Sapien to tap into the guild's vast community of Web3 gaming enthusiasts, providing them with a new opportunity to earn rewards while contributing to AI development.
Moreover, YGG's infrastructure tools allow the creation of communities which will facilitate the organization of Sapien contributors into groups where they can learn from and support each other. This aligns with YGG's vision of empowering its community to specialize in a wide range of skills that are expected to be in high demand as the world increasingly embraces remote and virtual collaboration.
Ultimately, by integrating data labeling into its skill set, YGG is diversifying the opportunities available to its community while positioning itself at the forefront of the evolving digital economy, extending far beyond its origins in gaming.
Axie Infinity: Training Users At Scale
